Special Events at CAG/ASG

Family Reading Night
A beloved tradition in the Elementary Section, this is an evening event that is offered at least once for each grade level throughout the school year in which students of particular grade levels and their parents are invited to the Library to participate in unique and engaging activities .  Administrators, teachers from the grade level teams and library staff members are responsible for the planning and delivery of these events.  Teachers are required to attend at least one Family Reading Night during the year.

Character Costume / Book Alike Day
Students, teachers and administrators celebrate the JOY of reading on the whimsical Character Costume Day, scheduled for the last day of October, by coming to school dressed as a character from a novel, story or poem.  At Recess, students parade in their costumes, sharing the creative ways they chose to depict favorite literary characters.

Turkey Bowl
This is an evening event that takes place prior to the US Thanksgiving holiday designed to build school spirit and support for the school’s sports program.  Teams from all three sections of the school host friendly games with area schools, while spectators enjoy cheering them on, food and fun!  Primarily, this event focuses on soccer, although other games take place, including a parent-faculty game at the end of the evening!  Teachers are encouraged to participate in this event by cheering on their students on the field.

Book Fair
This event is sponsored by the Library staff and includes popular books ordered from Scholastic as well as from local bookstores.  In several of the sections of the school, classes are assigned specific times to visit the fair, and teachers are expected to help students find appropriate books or to make lists of the books they would like to read.  Teachers may purchase books for themselves and/or place requests for titles for their classrooms to be purchased by the school.  There are two Book Fairs – one in November-December and one in May-June that is designed to offer many of the books that are included on the Vacation Reading Book Lists.

“Noche de Luces” (Night of Lights)
Another treasured school-wide tradition, this activity takes place at the end of November – beginning of December in the evening.  The purpose of this event is to enhance understanding and appreciation of the various cultures in the school and their traditions at the end of the year.  Art teachers host displays of student work, groups such as the chorus and orchestra present performances, parent representatives provide a variety of delicious foods for sale, troupes of teachers sing carols, and there are craft sales representing the various cultures.  Teachers support the event by collecting admission at the gates and by supervising activities for students such as cookie and ornament decorating workshops.

Celebrating the Arts
The Applied Arts teachers team up with family members who have artistic abilities to share with students during the Week of the Arts when family members join the classes for special demonstrations.  These activities culminate with a special assembly to recognize the value of the arts in our lives.  The week will culminate in a “Noche de Gala” with photographs from the class activities, an art exposition and a formal music and/or dance presentation by local performers.

Opening of Copa Americano
This is the morning of opening events that inaugurate the sports tournament involving several area schools, hosted by the school.  Participating teams are recognized, and a Swim Meet is planned as a special kick-off event.   Teachers are encouraged to attend to support their students who are involved in sports teams.

Sports Morning
On a Saturday in the spring, K-12 sports teams host friendly games with area schools.  Special games, activities and sales provide student athletes, family members and supporting students and teachers fun and food during the event.  Teachers are encouraged to attend this fun event that builds relationships and school spirit.

Baratillo
It is a school-wide community service event in which CAG families donate used items for an enormous “garage” sale.  Items are purchased at very low prices by CAG employees.  Middle school students, staff and APM/PTA volunteers carry out the sale and the funds collected are used to buy Christmas baskets for all the CAG support staff.

Bingo
This well known game has become a community and family tradition at CAG, organized by the Bingo Committee of the APM/PTA.  Each year, at the end of September, over 800 members of the community, including parents, students and staff come together to try their luck with bingo cards and beans, in an attempt to win valuable prizes.  The atmosphere is filled with good family fun, topped off by numerous food stands selling typical Guatemalan favorites.

Independence Day
September 15th, is a national holiday commemorating the day that Guatemala became a sovereign state after declaring its independence from Spain in 1821. At CAG students and staff celebrate and commemorate on the days prior to the 15th, by parading national dress and colors,  selling and eating typical foods, exhibiting/selling Guatemalan arts, including textiles, music and crafts, playing marimba music, decorating hallways and classrooms, showing videos, playing interactive and educational games and more. Civic ceremonies are held throughout the school. The objective is to promote and develop a deeper respect and love for the country, its history and its customs

Teacher Talent Show
This is a favorite event for teachers, parents and students.  Each May, teachers get together to put on a benefit/fundraiser for a pre-selected charity. The talent, humor, good will and camaraderie are evident as the teachers show their talents, or proudly demonstrate their lack thereof. The auditorium is packed with paying students who wish to see their teachers in a very different light.  It has become one of the traditions of CAG and teachers’ efforts are greatly appreciated.

Christmas Lunch
It is an event in which the main purpose is to share some time before the end of the year recess.  It is the only activity where administrative staff, educators, maintenance staff, transportation staff and outsourcing staff (cleaning and gardening) get together.   Usually the School offers a lunch and the PTA mothers organize a household appliance raffle.  This event lasts two hours, and at the end all staff wishes happy holidays.

The Annual Festival
It is  a  school-wide event in which the main purpose is to raise funds. This activity takes place on  a Friday usually during the month of March.  Each section of the school plans simple, fun and family oriented games for the students in which they learn skills as well as have fun.  These are some examples:  fishing game, bowling, races, rallies, karaoke, hair salon, etc.  Teachers organize the activity for their grade level.   This activity is also sponsored by PTA mothers who come and help.  There are food stands where mothers sell a  variety of treats from different cultures.   Attendance of teachers is mandatory.  Funds raised are used for social service objectives.
