CAG Accolades

Over the past couple of weeks Elementary, Middle School, High School and the Sports Department have held their annual awards ceremonies to honor a number of our CAG students on their outstanding performance and efforts throughout the year.   As a school, we are very proud of all their achievements and the fact that we can boast that they are a part of our community.

We also would like to congratulate all the seniors who received their CAG Pins, June 4th.  This is a special tradition that we hope you will remember with fondness.

DI Teams' Results

Congratulations to the CAG DI teams that recently represented the school and country at the Global Finals in Knoxville, TN! Both teams competed in the "Chorific!" Improvisational challenge at their respective levels. Their competition included 1st place teams representing states from all over the US, Canada, the UK, Poland, Singapore, China, Korea, Mexico, Colombia and Brazil - a total of 1,032 teams competing in 5 different challenges at 4 levels.

The Elementary School Team,  "The Black Belt Monkeys," finished in 16th place, out of 70 teams and with the 4th higest score in the Instant Challenge component of the competition.

In addition to competing it the tournamnet, each CAG team was matched up with a team from the US as an International Ambassador Team that supported them during the event and added to the intercultural experience for our students. These team members are a part of a 10-year CAG tradition of participating in what is known as the world's largest critical thinking and creative problem-solving competition, sponsored by Destination Imagination, Inc.

More information can be found about the event on www.globalfinals.org and about the Destination Imagination program at www.idodi.org.

Part of it! And PROUD of "The 2008 Teacher Talent Show!!!!"

Thanks to all the teachers who helped organize another incredible Teacher Talent Show. This year's show raised money for the 8th graders' ONIL Stove project and for cementing floors for pre-existing homes in Zone 3 ("Vida Joven" NGO project). It was a packed house last Thursday night and when the lights turned stage center, the CAG teachers stole the spotlight with their talents. We enjoyed listening to the tunes from "No Expectations" and the Divas, pounding out the rhythm with STOMP and "Brining it Back in Black", and mixing it up with Janet Remixs, Bollywood and the YMCA flashback. We climbed mountain tops on an "Outdoor Adventure" and explored the beauty of the world through "Earthscapes" all in one night! Thanks to all of you, too, who came out for the family fun and to support our causes. Click on the gallery below to see a few of the highlights of last week's show.

Children Helping Children in Third Grade

Children helping children! As a third grade team, we are working with La Unidad Nacional de Oncologia Pediatrica (UNOP), for children who have cancer.  Part of our third grade curriculum is the study of the human body and various health issues and concerns.  These close connections to our studies lead us to fundraising and sharing with the children from UNOP.  During our study of cancer, a local doctor came to share with our students about the causes and effects of various forms of this disease.  The students then invited their new friends to school to share in a presentation of a 4th grade play.  The third graders prepared a song and small gift for each visitor.  The visitors also prepared a skit for our students.  It was an emotional and moving experience.

However, our friendship did not just stop there.  We had a picnic with the students of the elementary section which helped to raise money to visit a local park with the UNOP children.  This visit, again, built greater friendships and camaraderie amongst our two groups.  The third grade team is also selling tickets for the Arco Iris Run on Sunday, May 11th.  The students have planned a presentation for the entire school so that all are aware how we can help this community of children in need.  All proceeds from this run/walk go straight to the UNOP organization.  Overall, this partnership has been extremely rewarding for all of us!  We are thankful to be a part of something so much greater than ourselves.

¡Felicitaciones!

    AASCA MIDDLE SCHOOL HONOR CHOIR

On March 28, choirs from AASCA schools will come together to interact and perform. We are excited about this project for a variety of reasons: it specifically addresses Middle School students, it provides a forum for the musical endeavors in our schools and it promotes interaction, cooperation and cross-cultural understanding. In this sense, the Honor Choir activity is one-of-a-kind.

The format for the activity is the following: Members of the choir are identified at each school and practice individually during the school year. The performance pieces, which include classical and current musical compositions, as well as other specific instructions are communicated to music teachers through postings on the AASCA web site.  When students come together  they will practice, engage in social activities and perform for members of the local community. Music teachers will also have an opportunity to meet and discuss professional issues.

We believe that this is a unique and worthwhile activity for our students, music teachers, schools and the AASCA organization. You are welcome to come to the presentation in the auditorium on Saturday March 29 at 3:00 p.m.  We look forward to see you there!

Guest Storyteller/Author to Inspire ES Writers

“I like that you make stories very funny.  I like how you act and I like that you have a BIG imagination.  You show us how to write a good book in funny ways.  You show that re-writing stories, we can make them better.  I like that you showed us that from little starts we have big finishes.  And the biggest think I like of you is that you showed all the kids that the only tool we need to write a book is our imagination.”
    R
    odrigo

Middle School Celebrates Math and Science!

This year, our annual Illuminating the Arts program was expanded to include the Arts and Sciences with the theme “Math and Science in the World Around Us.” Activities kicked off on the afternoon of Thurs. Jan.31st with exhibitions in the foyer of the auditorium. There were also student presentations, including the burial rite of chickens that had been mummified in Ms. Newmyer’s 7th grade Science classes. The performance by “Ciencia Sin Fronteras” vividly demonstrated how to concoct “mocos de vampiro” and use static electricity to make your hair stand on end. On February 1st, Middle School students spent the day rotating through a series of workshops all centered on the theme of how math and science are used in our everyday lives. The Middle School Math and Science teachers planned experiments and activities such as building a container to protect an egg from breaking, using measurement conversions to make ice cream, weaving a web to understand the interdependency of living creatures and working in teams to build weight-bearing structures. The day began with another Science presentation, this time by “Mad Science” and ended with an exciting discussion and display by Chepe Masacuata. Students saw an iguana, a hedgehog, a tarantula and had the opportunity to hold a (gasp!) python. Once again, the annual Middle School theme day proved to be an illuminating, interactive and educational experience for all.

    MUN Boston 2008
    By María Fernanda L.

We arrived to the building in which our first meetings were held with an uneasy stomach. After wiping the snow off our heads, we fragmented into small groups of delegates. As six o’clock approached, we went into our respective committees, sitting behind our country placards and observing all the other students present, inadvertently looking for the Guatemalan representative. As we figured out that he wasn’t present, our chair called for silence, motioning to start the first of four three-hour sessions. Immediately, seven hands shot up into the air, already bursting with arguments about war, human rights, and the environment.  We were ready to fix the world.

The weekend flew by in a progression of motions, votes, and resolutions. Each day was a challenge, discussing complex topics with remarkably bright delegates, whether it was Sudan’s argument for child soldiers or the United Nation’s standpoint on landmines in Vietnam. By the end of each day, our minds were tired, looking forward to lying down on our hotel beds but forcing ourselves to attend whichever social activity was planned. The weekend was, however, not all about diplomacy and formality, for we sent and received numerous notes from our fellow delegates, occasionally paying three dollars to send a rose and embarrass our friends with messages that were read aloud.  By the end of the four committees, we were a little bit smarter, knowledgeable, and witty, unaware that we had just experienced something most high-school students never do.

When the conferences ended early Sunday morning, we watched our fellow delegates leave the hotel lobby one by one, smiling whenever one of our friends lamented about school the following day. By three o’clock, we layered up our winter clothes and heading to Harvard Square.  On Monday, we shopped around Newbury Street in central Boston, unable to feel our hands in the freezing temperature. It was then that we had our final dinner together at the Hard Rock Café, reminiscing about the inside jokes we had created over the weekend and spending the last bit of money we had left. It was finally time to leave.

We returned to Guatemala different people. Over the weekend, we had developed a greater interest in international affairs, we had sharpened our debate skills, and we had developed a skill for lobbying. We had made new friends, we had a greater appreciation for the Guatemalan weather, and we had learned that homemade meals are irreplaceable.  We had also learned to ice skate, to bargain, and to be on time. We had even changed the world a little bit, but most importantly, we had changed ourselves.

    Math Day

How many students does it take to answer 733,273 questions mentally in 48 hours? The answer for the American School of Guatemala was 665!! This past March 5th was World Math Day, an event in which students from around the world participated in an online competition of mental math. The goal was to break last year's world record of 38 million questions answers. The response was overwhelming, as the students combined globally for 182,455,169 questions answered. The American School of Guatemala was responsible for nearly a million of those questions in which our community was full of fun, competition and eagerness to do mental math. As a group we clocked in 34,987 minutes of "Math" power in just two days (That's over 24 days worth of work!)

    One Hundred Days and Counting!

The Elementary School celebrated the 100th day of school with a morning full of math and science on the Moñtanita.  Every class had the opportunity to participate in an array of activities that focused on integrating math, science and the number 100.

At one station, students chalked their hair white, added some wrinkles and dressed up (Thanks to Mr. Strack’s and Ms. Potter’s closets) in an attempt to see what they would look like in one hundred years.  Speed and skill were tested at another station as everyone ran the 100 yard dash and competed to hula hoop or throw a ball 100 times in a row.  Another station focused on skip-counting to 100 in order to complete a science puzzle.  Teams of students took turns hopping on a giant 100’s board, earning a new puzzle piece  after each successful 100 count (skip counting to 100 by 7’s and 8’s was quite the task!).  Lastly, students were asked to work in teams to create an aluminum foil boat that not only floated, but also supported 100 jumbo paperclips.  CAG’s elementary school students were extremely innovative in their architectural ideas!

The 100th day of school was a huge success for all! We look forward to many more wonderful days to come.

AASCA DRAMA FESTIVAL IS COMING FEB. 1,2,3,4

We are very proud to announce that CAG will be hosting the International Drama Festival on February 1-4, 2008 whose main purpose is to promote theater development and friendship among high school students in Central American.

During the Festival we will have a variety of monologues, scenes, and improvisations.  Also, each group has prepared a One Act Play. There will be a total of 7 schools participating in the Festival!  We are proud to say that this is an excellent example of teamwork and collaboration amongst the staff and students in the High School.  Our Drama students, under the supervision of Mr. Fernando Mencos, are involved in many facets of the Festival including scene arrangements, light and sound, costumes, etc.   Members of the Student Government, supervised by Mrs. Suzanne Chang, will organize the "Ice Breaker" activities, which will set the tone for the entire weekend! Art Teachers, Amada Moreno and Juan Bautista Guas will prepare the decoration of the bulletin boards and workshop areas. There will also be a number of teacher volunteers throughout the weekend. This is an excellent example of teamwork on the part of the High School Staff!

Last Monday, students at CAG celebrated MLK, Jr. Day by participating in a memorable and moving presentation not only about Martin Luther King, Jr., but about what we all can do to stand up and help each other, our community and country.
Take a moment to read the words of several High School students shared about why we cannot be satisfied….

We cannot be satisfied as long as the rate of violence towards women is seen as something normal in our society,
We cannot be satisfied as long as the beauty of our country’s natural resources is destroyed by our own hands.
I have a dream that women will know what their rights are and        take a stand against any oppressor.
I have a dream that the natural resources of Guatemala are taken        into consideration and are seen as the elemental part that they are        for our country’s progress and well-being.

We cannot be satisfied as long as children of the country…

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

On Monday, January 21, CAG will celebrate the U.S. holiday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. CAG will hold two separate assemblies for grades 5-8 and grades 9-12. On this day, we hope to further introduce and remind students of the powerful example of Martin Luther King. King's ideas apply not just to the struggle of African Americans in America, but rather to universal principals of human relations for equal treatment and justice. As we prepare students to be the future leaders of Guatemala, it is our hope that we are producing intelligent minds infused with a sense of integrity and responsibility to influence a world characterized by love. As King said, "The hope of a secure and livable world lies with disciplined nonconformists who are dedicated to justice, peace and brotherhood."

50 Year at CAG/ASG and Going Strong!

What a special day January 8th is for us this year!  Do you know who holds the record for riding the CAG/ASG bus?  Fifty years ago, Celia de Melendez stepped onto the CAG school bus to start her first day of Kindergarten and is still with us today (also still riding the school bus!).

There is hardly a student that doesn’t know her name or who won’t forget her smiling face.  Thank you Celia for being such a vital link for all of us.  We appreciate you and all the love and dedication you have given to our school.
