Welcome to High School!

Here at CAG, students develop the skills that will help them become successful adults and positive contributors to the world around them. Of course, our students graduate as bilingual and bicultural individuals, but they also learn how to become independent, critical-thinkers and life-long learners. We teach organizational skills and good study and work habits. We also reinforce the importance of values such as self-control, honesty and responsibility.

Our High School program motivates and supports students in their pursuit of academic and personal excellence. Our teachers and administrative personnel are qualified professionals and experts in their fields of service. Classes focus not only on teaching knowledge but on helping our students develop the skills they will need to be successful in the future. We value a friendly and courteous learning environment.

Here at CAG, we believe in a school culture that embraces and celebrates diversity. We welcome students from all ethnic and religious backgrounds. We work diligently to create an environment where students can express their opinions openly and freely, and where they learn to hold respectful discussions and debates about important issues. In this manner, our students learn to celebrate their differences. They grow to understand that diversity builds strength, not only in our educational community, but throughout society as a whole.

As part of our focus on building well-rounded individuals, community service plays an important role in our students’ education. We have a social service requirement that all our students are expected to complete each school year. Our students help out with a variety of organizations including HELPS International and Habitat for Humanity.

The American School of Guatemala recognizes the unique characteristics and needs of teenage students in the 21st century. Our holistic approach to education supports their development as complete human beings. We use a variety of pedagogical tools to complete this objective, but we also take the opportunity simply to talk one on one with our students and get to know them better as people.

Our student body has a wide range of academic interests. By allowing students to choose from a varied selection of courses, we encourage them to explore who they are as individuals.

Our core curriculum includes required studies in all the major academic subjects including Math, Science, Social Studies, English and Spanish Literature/Language Arts, and Physical Education. We offer a selection of choices within each of these subject areas including a number of Advanced Placement courses and electives that allow students in 11th and 12th grade a lot of opportunity to tailor their studies to their personal interests and needs. Additionally, we offer a selection of extracurricular studies including Music Lessons, Journalism, Athletics activities, Swimming and Team Sports.

Desarrollamos en los estudiantes las destrezas que les ayudarán a ser adultos exitosos en la comunidad, tales como autocontrol,  honestidad,  responsabilidad, organización, bilingüismo,  pensamiento crítico, e independencia.

Reconocemos las características de la etapa que nuestros estudiantes están viviendo y les apoyamos en su crecimiento.   Al comprender sus necesidades, facilitamos herramientas y  oportunidades de realizarse  como seres humanos íntegros.

Nuestro currículum atiende las áreas académicas de Matemática, Ciencias, Estudios Sociales, Literatura inglesa, Literatura española, Expresiones Artísticas, Educación Física.  Además ofrecemos actividades extracurriculares como Música, Periodismo, Atletismo, Natación, Deporte, etc.

El servicio a la comunidad es un componente importante en la formación de nuestros  estudiantes, por lo que se promueve la participación en las jornadas médicas de Helps International,  las jornadas de construcción con Habitat for Humanity,  y  la realización de un mínimo de horas anuales de servicio, que los estudiantes pueden realizar, en forma individual o grupal,  en alguna otra institución que requiera de sus habilidades y destrezas.
