The American School of Guatemala (CAG) is an independent, non-profit, non-denominational, college preparatory school that offers a rigorous academic program for preschoolers to 12th graders, modeled after the best educational practices and methodologies of the United States of America.
We are founded on the principles of a co-educational, bi-cultural (Guatemala-United States), bilingual (Spanish-English) program. It serves the Guatemalan community and other families who value a holistic approach to education.
Respect for religious, political, social, and cultural diversity is a fundamental part of the school’s identity.
CAG is fully accredited in the U.S. by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and is recognized by the Guatemalan Ministry of Education as a Laboratory School.
As a member of the Del Valle Grupo Educativo, CAG is actively committed to the development of education in Guatemala.

Definition of Learning
Aspirational Learning at CAG is a dynamic and iterative process that engages learners in authentic experiences that further develop their unique values, voice, and purpose. In a physically, socially, and emotionally safe environment, learners are empowered to be the co-designers and creators of their own learning as they collaborate, innovate, and act ethically and empathetically to make an impact on an ever-changing world.
We Believe
- Our students, as individuals, have unique intellectual, social, emotional and physical characteristics and needs;
- AII students can learn, and they learn most effectively when they are actively engaged in the learning process when they are faced with challenging expectations and when they are held to clearly defined standards of excellence;
- Learning should take place within a physically and psychologically safe environment;
- AII members of the school community, which includes faculty, staff, parents, and students share the responsibility far accomplishing our mission;
- Continuous improvement is essential to providing quality educational opportunities for our students.
Meet Our General Director
Welcome to the American School of Guatemala (CAG)! What makes CAG so special? In 2023 CAG hosted the AMISA Regional Educators Conference, where over 600 educators gathered and weighed in on this question. I was one of those educators, enjoying a transition visit, presenting, and listening to everyone talk about CAG.
First, everyone is always impressed with the beautiful campus and the temperate weather. Just as impressive is the friendly vibe and kindness that surrounds the CAG team. Attending the many outstanding sessions offered by CAG faculty highlighted the plethora of expertise at CAG. Finally, the details impressed all the attendees! From an Easter Alfombra front and center on the first day to the colorful lanyards for the name tags, the teacher band and dancing at the social, and the staff gathered to “drum” the buses off campus on the last day, the details spoke to what makes CAG special!
As CAG shortly approaches its 80th Anniversary (Est. 1945), how will we ensure that the next 80 years are just as special? The answer is actually pretty simple: our students! We see our alumni all over the world doing amazing things, along with our current students performing, growing, and reaching for their dreams. As many of my colleagues at the AMISA conference said to me, "Can you believe you get to be here at CAG?! You are very lucky!"
They were right; we are all very lucky to be a part of CAG, where everyone is welcome to shine!
